Meta Watch #2 - Broly Zapes

Updated: Oct 23, 2019

As the national finals in North America, Oceania and Europe approach, our community is in deep preparation mode. Constant buying and selling of cards to make your last changes to your deck. Untap testing deep into the night. That's what it's all about. Players are either on edge or counting the days like a kid waiting for Christmas! Whoever you are, whatever type of player you are, you've heard of this next deck. A player from the United States named Richard Zapp caused us to watch in awe as he played "Broly Zapes", a U/Y Broly/Apes deck. Let's get into the juicy details.

The list:

The general idea of the deck is to get as many of the 4 drop Great Ape Bardock, Raiders Warcry in hand as possible, and play them all to beat your opponent to death. This has a similar gameplan to R/Y apes which we covered in our interview with Christopher Cheong, but it doesn't use the traditional King Vegeta Ape to lower the cost of the 4 drops, it just utilises Senzu Bean and Zen-Oh Button to keep the cost down, which is arguably much easier to set up than the aforementioned method. Let's go though the lines of play. Just pointing out again that these are if you get your ideal hand etc.

Turn 1

You want to mulligan for a multicolour energy so you can play it turn 1. Then if you manage to charge a few Beerus, Fickle God, you'll be golden.

Turn 2

Another Multi in energy is a perfect start. You can then play the Goku Black, Unforeseen Darkness for 2 energy, which get's you a 15k swing, plus a draw 2 at the end of your turn, as well as untap an energy for defense. You're swinging with leader to plus your hand, and passing. You now have one energy up for defense. On your opponents turn, you want to by senzuing up, then getting an ape out for 2 energy. That can mess with their plans by resting a battle card and drawing you one. If they attack more and you have another ape and a Zen-Oh Button, you can counter with the button, untap 2 then combo the other ape into play.

Turn 3

Turn 3 is a fun one. Ideally you want to be at 4 or 5 life. If you managed to get the apes on board last turn, you are golden to go in on this turn. Planet Vegeta to find an ape if you don't have one. Swinging and comboing an ape into play, and awakening during the swing. You now have 3 energy up and 2-3 apes in play if they didn't remove any. You can go for game then and there. Restanding an ape for extra pressure with leader, or playing Mira, Creator Absorbed for guaranteed damage if you have your Swift Retaliation Cooler in hand and a Senzu to Untap.

So that is a lot shorter than the last issue of Meta Watch, simply because the deck does go off super early.

Now there are a few different lines of play depending on how the turns pan out. You can play another Goku Black turn 3 to fill your hand for defense to wait out another turn. Also, if your opponent has cleared your board, or you didn't manage to get the pieces in hand, you can play Janemba, Infernal Intruder for 1 energy to put a 20k crit beater on board. You also have Boujack Resonant Agent of Destruction that you can play on either turn to rest your opponents battle cards and force a cheeky mill 1. You then of course have the counter plays in Undying Spirit Son Gohan, Ultra Instinct Son Goku, The Unstoppable, Desperate Measures and Cold Bloodlust to keep you alive.

I hope this helps prepare you for Nats! Good luck from all of us at The Saibamen!
